REVIEW

Review

At the V&A museum I attended two exhibitions; ball gowns and costume gallery.

Each exhibition was set out differently, the ball gown exhibition had two floors and each floor was set out differently, the lower floor all the garments were in glass cabinets and you couldn’t see the backs or fronts of some other than if they had a mirror, although the mirror wasn’t true to the garment. Whereas upstairs all the garments were on large beads meant to be a pearl necklace some spun around and others were static, it was in three sections and not against the walls like downstairs, it was much more spacious and easier to see each garment.
The costume gallery had three separate rooms, two were set out the same and the first room was different, it had four rows of costume explaining how they use setting and character personality to make a costume. Each costume had a description, movie title and actor or actresses name on a board designed as a script. The next two rooms had sections of costumes in squares, the rooms had black walls and spotlights on each costume block.

There was a wide range of garments through both the galleries, in the ball gowns gallery ranging from the 1950’s to present day, from major designers from Alexander McQueen to Vivienne Westwood all the designers made couture dresses sometimes for one person to wear and other times to lend out for different celebrity’s to wear to show off the design and designer.
The costume exhibition had been specifically made for a certain scene in the movie to blend or stand out from the background. Each was made to give ideas of character and character personality.

My favourite items of each exhibition was the Alexander McQueen ostrich feather dress, because the colour had been thought out and the silhouette of the dress and the different feathers had been thought through very sufficiently, it had been designed so delicately but looked such a heavy design.
The costume gallery my favourite was the captain jack sparrow costume, all the materials had been thought out for the movement of the character and showed the characters personality, it had been very well thought out.
